Outstanding Social Capital Project Awards

Dancing Life-Youth Empowerment Project
Organisation : Tung Wah Group of Hospitals - Tuen Mun Integrated Services Centre
Funding Period : 14 January 2013 to 13 January 2016
Amount Granted : $2,199,000
District : Tuen Mun
Project Summary : This project networked different sectors of the community to support disadvantaged youth with low educational attainment, skills and income. The project made use of street dancing as a means to attract the participation of young people in need, equip them with the skills for making a living and enhance their sense of self-competence and self-confidence. This helped them set positive life targets and build social capital. After acquiring the dance techniques, some members have made a good career for themselves, or have their roles transformed from recipients of help to dance tutors in different organisations.

Quote from the winner

We would like to express our gratitude to our collaborators including welfare organisations that provide volunteer services, the MAKE UP FOREVER ACADEMY and SO DANCE STUDIO for providing career counselling coaching and the HKU Centre on Behavioural Health for recruiting mentors. Apart from enhancing their sense of self-confidence and self-efficacy, the young people also established the relationship of mutual trust, mutual help and reciprocity with each other through interaction with people from all walks of life. Some of the young people have become the core members who lead other members in the centre to continue participating in community affairs and develop their potentials.

We wish to take this opportunity to express our heartfelt thanks to CIIF for its support and guidance, and people from various sectors for their recognition of our efforts. Besides, the award also goes to the project workers, namely Miss CHOI Yee Mei, Mr. CHING Hong Ho, Mr. Kay Wilter SiaSat and the staff from TWGHs Tuen Mun Integrated Services Centre. Their enthusiasm, care, coaching and insight have motivated the youth to develop their potentials and set a clear life goal through the project and the networks established in the community, and have helped build social capital. Their hard work and contribution to the community have definitely transcended what we expect from the project. We promise to set up a dancing life studio in the future, and continue to uphold the professionalism of social workers in offering help to the youth and building social capital.
