"Healthy Mothers-to-be – A Women and Community Networking Project"
Organisation : Kwun Tong Methodist Social Service
Funding Period : April 2003 to March 2005
Amount Granted : $232,040
Targeted District : Hong Kong
Key Collaborators : Specialists in Paediatrics, Specialists in Obstetrics & Gynaecology, Registered Nurses, Chinese medicine practitioners, Consultants from the La Leche League International
Project Objectives : The Project gives grassroots women an opportunity to make use of their knowledge and personal advantages to help others. With the support from the cross-sectoral medical specialists, the women are trained as ‘post-natal carers’ to take care of post-natal mothers and their new born babies, who build a mutual trust and assistance network among themselves.

Critical Success Factor

With the support of the professional medical network, quality postnatal care workers have been trained up by the project to provide service for families in need. To acquire experience and maintain service quality, every newly trained worker will be matched with an experienced worker. After the end of funding period, the project continues to operate on a self-financed basis. So far over 200 women have become postnatal care workers who have served 4,000 families.
