Hong Kong Disneyland Resort
CIIF Project : On Call 24 –Multi-disciplinary Community Health Promotion Scheme
Agency : Hong Kong Sheng Kung Hui Welfare Council Limited

Critical Success Factor

Hong Kong Disneyland Resort (Disneyland) has mobilised its corporate volunteer teams to participate in the project. Pooling corporate resources together to provide training to elderly volunteers, Disneyland has invited professional trainers to host workshops covering topics such as story-telling skills, horticulture and green cooking in order to unlock the potential of elderly people. Thanks to the joint efforts of Disneyland and the agency, so far nearly 60 elderly volunteers have been trained and become Happy Caring Ambassadors. These volunteers are provided with regular volunteering opportunities in the community so that they can bring the knowledge acquired to the community and the families therein. Disneyland has not only contributed to the project through enhancing social cohesion and developing a caring culture in the community, but it has also promoted a sense of worthiness among the elderly people, enabling them to become social capital.

Quote from the winner

Hong Kong Disneyland Resort (Disneyland) is honoured to receive once again the “Outstanding Social Capital Partnership Award (Corporate)”. Disneyland has always been devoted to extending partnerships with various community organisations to contribute to the community, and this award is indeed significant recognition of our efforts.

In November 2015, Disneyland and the Hong Kong Sheng Kung Hui Welfare Council (SKH) recruited a group of senior volunteers through the “On call 24 – Multi-disciplinary Community Health Promotion Scheme” and provided them with professional training in storytelling and communication skills from the Disney VoluntEARS. The first batch of about 30 “Happy Caring Ambassadors” gave performances of storytelling in communities and visited elderly singletons who live alone. Disneyland held a graduation ceremony for these ambassadors and invited them to perform in the park on the first day of the Chinese New Year in 2016.

Apart from the skill of storytelling, the senior volunteers also received gardening and cooking training from Cast Members with Disneyland’s horticulture and chef teams. The trainees can apply what they learn in their daily lives and enrich their topics of conversation with their training experience when they visited the elderly singletons. Disneyland expects to train up about 150 senior volunteers as “Happy Caring Ambassadors” in the next two years through this programme to serve the community.

Disneyland would like to express heartfelt thanks to CIIF for funding the project, SKH for its invitation and the Disney VoluntEARS for their generous contributions.
