10 Years of Social Capital: Over 300 persons attended house captain training

In the past ten years, 37 funded projects which applied the strategy of house captain and involved nearly 1 000 house captains in supporting the community were implemented in different housing estates. To better equip house captains and project staff, the CIIF organised brainstorming sessions and training programmes for them in May 2012, and offered a series of practical training programmes from July to October 2012. Over 300 house captains and volunteers attended the enriched training programmes as follows :

Core House Captain Training :

On 14 May 2012, 68 house captains from different districts participated in the first orientation programme to share their experience and provide mutual support for empowerment of the community.

Training on Home Safety :

On 27 July 2012, 23 house captains attended a talk organised by the Housing Society Elderly Resources Centre for a better understanding of elderly home safety and enhancing their ability and confidence in taking care of their neighbours.

Training on Understanding the Emotional and Mental Health :

On 30 August 2012, 42 house captains attended the mental health talk hosted by Dr. Cavy Lee, Clinical Psychologist of the Social Welfare Department to increase their related knowledge and responsive skills so that they can provide timely support for people in need in the community.

Training on Crisis Management :

On 26 October 2012, the Police Negotiator Cadre of Hong Kong Police was invited to give a talk which attracted an attendance of 105 participants. After the talk, many house captains indicated that the skills of crisis management shared by the guest speakers would make them more alert to the community’s need, and also enhance their responsive skills to contingencies in the neighbourhood.

Training on Basic First Aid Skill :

111 persons attended the first aid training offered by the Hong Kong St. John Ambulance, which could help house captains cope with daily first aid needs and exigencies.
