"House Captains Kick Off Ceremony"
CIIF Presents the First Mega Caring Patchwork
1,500 House Captains Pledged to Energise the Community

In the past years, 40 House Captain Programmes were implemented in different housing estates. To further promote House Captain Strategies to wider community, the Community Investment and Inclusion Fund (CIIF) organised the House Captains Kick Off Ceremony at Tai Po Mega Hall on 15 September 2012 to mark the launch of the new 1,500 House Captain Programmes.

This year CIIF celebrates its 10th anniversary. One of the highlights was the presentation of a 20 feet x 20 feet Mega Caring Patchwork made out of 200 pieces of patches by CIIF spokesperson Dr. David Lee, Chairman of the Promotion and Development Sub-Committee Mr Lai Chi-tong, Convenor of House Captain Campaign Ms Chau Chuen-heung, as well as two CIIF ambassadors, namely artistes Mr Hin Cheung and G.E.M. on the ceremony. The patches were made by members of the community aged from 4 to 79. Every piece of patch carried a touching story. The Mega Patchwork symbolises that together we build a caring Hong Kong.

“House Captain Networks provide the foundation for developing caring estates in which residents care for and help their neighbours. Caring neighbours can form support networks for families and help resolve the problems of individuals and families of general and non-emergency nature. Based on the remarkable experience of the House Captain Strategies over the years, CIIF will organise a series of events to further promote the House Captain Programme. We aim to increase the number of House Captains by 1,000 within the next three years.” Mr Lai Chi-tong, Chairman of the Promotion and Development Sub-Committee said.

Ms Chau Chuen-heung, Convenor of House Captain Campaign added, “We would like to extend our special thanks to our partners, such as the Hong Kong Housing Society, the Social Welfare Department, the Hong Kong Police and the Hong Kong St. John Ambulance, for the training courses provided to our House Captains last few months.”

Mr Chan Chi-wing was awarded as “Honourable House Captain”. He is one of the pioneers who have joined the House Captain Programme for almost 10 years. Everyone calls him “Big Brother Wing”. On the kick off ceremony, he shared the three criteria for an outstanding House Captain, namely being “bold, cautious and thick-skinned”.

Other House Captains also shared how they helped forge mutual trust and support among their communities. On the finale, CIIF spokesperson Dr. David Lee performed the CIIF’s theme song “Siu Ming visits the community” with all the other guests.

20 outstanding patches will be uploaded onto CIIF facebook fans page for public voting from 8 to 21 October 2012. The top ten winners will win Fairwood’s cash coupon at a value of HK$400 each.
